Circadian rhythms and lifestyle timing impact energy and metabolism

Research highlights the importance of synchronizing daily habits with the body's internal circadian rhythms to stabilize energy, metabolism, and sleep. A randomized study published in JAMA Pediatrics involving students demonstrated that a brief, two-week protocol can effectively readjust the biological clock. This intervention utilized morning bright light exposure for 30 to 60 minutes and the use of blue-light-filtering glasses for two hours before sleep to gradually shift sleep-wake cycles.

Beyond sleep, the timing of food consumption—a field known as chrononutrition—plays a critical role in metabolic health. The body is biologically optimized to process nutrients during daylight hours, with insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation being higher in the morning and decreasing throughout the day. Consistently eating late at night or deviating from these natural cycles can lead to metabolic desynchronization, potentially contributing to unfavorable health indicators when combined with insufficient sleep.
