Circular economy and resource management focus on BAU 2027

The concept of the circular economy and resource management is gaining prominence in response to Earth Overshoot Day, the date when humanity's resource consumption exceeds the Earth's annual regenerative capacity. In the construction sector, there is a growing shift toward viewing existing buildings as potential resource reservoirs rather than just properties. According to the Wuppertal Institut, Germany alone holds approximately 20.8 billion tons of building materials in residential and non-residential structures.

This shift emphasizes the preservation, further development, and repurposing of existing buildings over demolition and new construction. The BAU 2027 trade fair in Munich is set to present innovations in efficient material use and circular resource management. Simultaneously, agricultural representatives, such as the Landfrauen in the Bavarian Farmers' Association, are calling for increased sustainability and resource protection to preserve land for future generations through improved production methods and renewable energy.
