Circular economy drives growth for German seaports and plastic industry
The circular economy is increasingly viewed as a tool for industrial resilience and supply chain security. In Lower Saxony, Germany, the 34th Lower Saxony Port Day highlighted how seaports are evolving to support recycling and sustainable production to mitigate geopolitical risks and resource dependencies.
Seaports of Niedersachsen reported an upward trend in recent half-year figures, noting that sustainability is becoming a competitive advantage. These ports are positioning themselves as critical hubs for both the energy transition and circular economy logistics.
However, the transition to recycled materials faces consumer hurdles. The Plastic is Fantastic Association (PiFA) notes a 'recycling paradox' where consumers subconsciously associate recycled plastics with waste due to a 'contagion effect.' Research published in 'Food Quality and Preference' suggests that the use of recyclates can negatively impact the perceived quality of a product's contents. To counter this, PiFA suggests that brands use transparent, regional storytelling and high-standard processes, such as PET bottle-to-bottle recycling, to build consumer trust.
