Circulus and NMIS trial digital product passports
The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and Glasgow-based Circulus CRM Limited have completed a six-month trial demonstrating the use of digital product passports (DPPs) in a remanufacturing environment.
DPPs act as a digital record for physical items, storing data regarding an item’s manufacturing, reuse, and recycling history. The trial aimed to show how this technology can facilitate the repair, refurbishment, and recycling of electrical equipment, helping manufacturers extend product lifecycles and reduce waste.
To ensure the technology did not disrupt daily business, researchers used a replica of Circulus’s HIVE business management system. During the trial, electrical assets were linked to secure digital records via QR codes, allowing authorized users to access lifecycle information as products moved through various stages of the circular economy.
