CISAL Catania warns of social emergency regarding youth distress

CISAL Catania has issued an alarm regarding youth distress, characterizing it as a social and health emergency that requires structural institutional responses rather than temporary measures. The organization highlights a complex intersection of economic hardship, psychological malaise, and a growing fear of the future among adolescents and young adults.

Citing Istat data, the report notes that over a quarter of minors face risks of poverty or social exclusion, with particularly high rates in Southern Italy and the islands. This economic instability is compounded by widespread emotional suffering and the breakdown of traditional family structures, which has left many young people without authoritative guidance.

In response to these trends, CISAL Catania previously launched a project in February 2026 to prevent youth deviance, supported by the Municipality of Catania and the University. Observers note that current antisocial behaviors among Italian youth are often a byproduct of a declining national ecosystem, where economic instability and the erosion of educational agencies have diminished the perceived value of long-term commitment.
