Citadel Gains 6% in July After Buying Distressed AI Portfolio
Ken Griffin’s Citadel saw its flagship Wellington fund rise about 5.9%‑6% in July 2026, delivering a 12% year‑to‑date gain. The boost came after the firm bought the bulk of the $16 billion public‑equity portfolio of Leopold Aschenbrenner’s AI‑focused hedge fund Situational Awareness at roughly a 10% discount. The purchase was completed in less than 24 hours and helped halt a sharp sell‑off in AI‑related stocks that had driven Situational Awareness’s value down about 67% in July after a 439% rise from January to June.
Citadel, which manages roughly $71 billion in assets, also posted double‑digit gains in its other strategies – the tactical trading unit rose about 11% and the equities fund about 14% in the same month. The deal contrasted with losses at many peer funds that suffered double‑digit declines amid the AI‑stock correction. After the sale, Aschenbrenner announced a new $400 million investment in a private AI company, signaling an attempt to rebuild his fund’s position.
The transaction involved competition from other buyers such as Jane Street and Millennium Management and was facilitated by major banks including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citigroup.
