Citi Bike expands New York City network by 11%
Citi Bike has expanded its footprint in New York City by approximately 11%, adding 234 stations across seven neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. The expansion includes more than 3,700 new docks located in Bay Ridge, Brownsville, East New York, and Kensington in Brooklyn; Norwood and Riverdale in the Bronx; and Forest Hills in Queens.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the expansion, which originated from an initiative first announced by former Mayor Eric Adams in December 2024. In Bay Ridge, where installation began last fall, riders have already completed over 75,000 trips. Additionally, Lyft plans to add hundreds of docks within existing service areas this fall, including Midtown, Chelsea, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Gowanus.
The growth occurs as city officials address rising costs for electric bike users. Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn stated that reducing rider costs is a high priority. While the bike-share system was established without direct public subsidies, Flynn noted that the city’s next contract with Lyft, which expires in 2029, could provide an opportunity to reconsider affordability.
