Citi Bike users face higher costs due to e-bike speed limits
Citi Bike users in New York City are reporting increased costs following a mandatory 15 mph speed cap for e-bikes. The speed limit, implemented by the previous mayoral administration, has resulted in longer commute times, which directly increases the cost for riders who are charged per minute.
Reports indicate that the slower speeds have correlated with rising profits for the Lyft-owned service. Citi Bike recorded approximately $24.7 million in profit in 2025, up from $6.8 million in 2024.
The company faces additional scrutiny as the New York City Council prepares to hold hearings on nearly two dozen bills regarding e-bikes, some of which may impact Citi Bike’s business model. Activist groups continue to advocate for improved cycling infrastructure and safer streets amidst these regulatory discussions.
