Citigroup to launch institutional Bitcoin custody via Custody+ platform

Citigroup has announced plans to launch institutional Bitcoin custody services later this year through its new Custody+ platform. This initiative aims to integrate digital assets directly into the bank's existing financial infrastructure, allowing institutional clients to manage both traditional securities, such as stocks and bonds, and Bitcoin within a single, unified framework.

The Custody+ platform is designed to support the 24/7 nature of digital asset markets by providing near-real-time asset servicing, settlement, liquidity management, and foreign exchange services. This move follows a broader modernization of Citi's infrastructure; the bank reported that its Single Event Processing technology has already enabled over 80% of its asset-servicing events to be processed in real time, with some processing times reduced by as much as 92%.

Industry analysts note that Citigroup's entry into the space follows similar moves by BNY, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Coinbase. The regulatory environment in the United States has also become more favorable following the SEC's repeal of Staff Accounting Bulletin 121, which previously increased the costs for banks to custody digital assets. While Bitcoin will be the first supported asset, the bank's infrastructure is built to accommodate the continuous trading requirements of modern financial markets.
