Financial leaders warn of AI cyber threats and $1 trillion spending surge
Financial leaders are warning of a dual-front challenge posed by artificial intelligence: massive capital requirements and escalating cybersecurity threats. Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser described a ‘tsunami of patching’ as firms race to defend perimeters against advanced AI models like Anthropic’s Mythos, which have increased risks of fraud, social engineering, and sophisticated cyberattacks.
Simultaneously, the scale of AI investment is surging. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon projected that spending within the hyperscaler ecosystem could reach $1 trillion next year, up from $700 billion this year. While Dimon noted that AI could eventually have a deflationary effect through productivity gains, he cautioned that the current investment surge could contribute to short-term inflationary pressures.
In response to the rise of ‘agentic commerce,’ a coalition of global banks including Bank of America, Capital One, and NatWest has published principles to ensure the responsible development of AI agents. The banks noted that consumers remain uncertain whether AI agents will act in their best interests or if they might fall victim to new forms of AI-driven scams and fraud.
