Citigroup prepares Banamex IPO to complete Mexico divestment
Citigroup is advancing the total separation of its former retail banking division in Mexico, Banamex, through a planned initial public offering (IPO). CEO Jane Fraser stated that the firm is working intensively to complete the divestment.
The IPO, which is expected to take place in early next year, aims to raise more than $3 billion, though the final size and price are still under analysis. A consortium of major Wall Street and European banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and Barclays, is working to offer Citigroup's remaining stake to investors.
Following Fernando Chico Pardo's acquisition of a 25% stake in Banamex in late 2025, his sons, Andrés and Felipe Chico Pardo, have met with investors in New York. They outlined plans to revitalize the bank by pursuing more aggressive lending strategies to regain market share lost during Citi's long-term management of the brand.
