Citizen Lab confirms Pegasus spyware targeting in Serbia

The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto has confirmed that the phone of a student movement participant in Serbia was infected with Pegasus spyware. At least 14 individuals from the student movement, civil society, and the political opposition received warnings from Apple that they were likely targets of this mercenary spyware.

While the identity of those behind the attacks remains unconfirmed, the Serbian government has denied any involvement. The incident raises questions regarding the impact of surveillance on political behavior and the distinction between state incentive and coercion within behavioral science.
