Trump sued by citizens over White House media access restrictions

Six citizens have filed a federal lawsuit in New York against President Donald Trump and three senior aides, alleging that administration restrictions on White House press access violate the public's First Amendment rights. The plaintiffs, who include a human rights advocate, a political journalist, a Yale history professor, a high school civics teacher, a legal journalist, and a student journalist, argue that such bans deprive the public of their right to receive independent information about the government.

The lawsuit was filed by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University and Yale Law School’s Media Freedom & Information Access Clinic. It names Donald Trump, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, and Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran as defendants.

The Trump administration has responded to the legal action by stating that no person can demand access to the Oval Office and suggesting that media outlets peddling misinformation can report from outside the White House.
