Automotive industry sees shifts in EV pricing and consumer value
The automotive industry is seeing significant shifts in consumer value and technology. In the United Kingdom, the average price of a new electric vehicle has fallen below that of petrol models for the first time, driven by manufacturer discounts and government incentives.
In terms of consumer preference, a large-scale European study identified the Dacia Duster as the best value-for-money vehicle due to its low maintenance and fuel costs. Meanwhile, The Car Expert named the electric Citroën ë-C3 Aircross the ‘Best Value Family Car 2026’, citing its superior space and comfort compared to competitors.
Reliability and maintenance remain critical concerns. A mechanic highlighted how excessive idling can cause engine damage equivalent to 350,000 km of driving, even if the odometer shows low mileage. Additionally, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into the Toyota Grand Highlander (2024–2026) following reports that road debris could penetrate front grille openings and damage vital heat exchangers, potentially causing loss of power.
