Citroën BX GTi marks 40 years of the iconic sporty sedan

The Citroën BX GTi is marking its 40th anniversary since its debut in July 1986. Originally designed by Bertone under the direction of Marcello Gandini, the BX series saw over 2.3 million units produced between 1982 and 1994.

The GTi variant was introduced to provide a sporty alternative to the standard sedan while maintaining the brand's signature hydropneumatic suspension. The initial 1986 model featured a 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine producing 125 CV, a weight of 1,025 kg, and a top speed of nearly 200 km/h. Subsequent iterations included the 16V model in 1988, which increased output to 160 CV, and the 4x4 version introduced in 1989.

Beyond its historical significance, the BX 4x4 continues to be used in adventure rallies, such as the Budapest–Bamako and Trans-Carpathia, due to its unique driving characteristics and comfort.
