Citrus Close housing project faces scrutiny over safety and costs

The future of the Citrus Close housing development in Laventille remains uncertain following scrutiny over its procurement and safety. Minister in the Ministry of Housing, Philip Alexander, has questioned why a $191 million contract for 191 apartments was awarded to a company whose bid was $54 million higher than the lowest bidder.

Alexander raised concerns regarding the site's location, describing it as a “hot zone” contested by the Beetham and Laventille gangs. He warned that placing residents in this area could lead to loss of life and questioned the economic viability of the project, suggesting it might take over 200 years for taxpayers to recover costs.

While approximately $51 million has already been spent on the site, construction has stopped. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is tasked with protecting public assets and equity while authorities assess whether the project should be completed or abandoned.
