Citrus Longhorned Beetle threatens Turkish hazelnut crops

The Citrus Longhorned Beetle, colloquially known as the 'Dracula bug,' is threatening hazelnut production in Turkey's Black Sea region. After being managed in Trabzon, the pest was recently detected in the Fındıklı district of Rize, prompting the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to implement quarantine measures in the affected areas.

Originating from East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea), the beetle is believed to have entered Turkey through imported ornamental plants. The larvae cause severe damage by boring deep galleries into the cambium and wood of trees, which disrupts water and nutrient transport. This process leads to drying branches, reduced yields, and can ultimately result in the death of the tree.

Experts note that the pest is highly destructive, affecting over 180 species across 87 genera, including hazelnut, cherry, maple, and poplar. Authorities have urged producers to report signs of infestation, such as round holes in trunks, sawdust accumulation at the base of trees, or unexplained drying of vegetation.
