Cittadella della Carità faces critical debt restructuring hearing in Taranto

The financial crisis surrounding the Cittadella della Carità healthcare facility in Taranto has entered a critical phase as a court hearing approaches to decide on a debt restructuring plan. Two primary options are under consideration: an acquisition by the Bernardini Group or a plan involving the Archdiocese of Taranto as a guarantor for debts and future investments.

According to recent documentation, the Archdiocese of Taranto has proposed a modified plan that includes a non-repayable contribution of 1.7 million euros and an additional 2 million euros derived from the cash flows of the facility's RSA (nursing home) division. To support these commitments, a list of real estate assets with an estimated value of 10 million euros has been provided, though reports indicate this serves as documentation of assets rather than a formal mortgage commitment.

The situation is complicated by legal questions regarding the autonomy of the Foundation. Since the Cittadella della Carità is managed by a Foundation rather than the Archdiocese, significant financial commitments may require Vatican approval. The facility faces substantial financial pressure, with regional authorities previously citing debts of approximately 25 million euros and concerns regarding unpaid wages and job security.
