Vigo City Council plans Plaza de España tunnel expansions
The Vigo City Council is advancing plans for the semi-pedestrianization of Plaza de España. A technical mobility study suggests extending the Gran Vía and Pizarro tunnels to better integrate vehicle circulation with the creation of new public spaces, green zones, and pedestrian areas.
The report deems these tunnel expansions viable and advisable for the success of the new traffic scheme. Specifically, it proposes extending the Gran Vía tunnel to the south and the Pizarro tunnel to shift its exit point, avoiding interference with the planned outer circulation ring.
While the project aims to divert significant traffic away from the center of the plaza, the study notes that the new outer ring will not be able to absorb all current vehicle movements. Consequently, the plan recommends maintaining at least two lanes of traffic connected to Avenida de Madrid and Gran Vía to manage flow.
