City of Cockburn announces no plans to replace South Lake jetty
The City of Cockburn has confirmed there are currently no plans to replace the Berrigan Lake jetty in South Lake. The structure was removed last month following an assessment that found it had substantially deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to seasonal flooding.
The City stated the removal was necessary to address serious public safety risks and was conducted without community consultation due to the urgency of the situation. While acknowledging the jetty’s significance as a community asset, officials noted that recurring environmental factors and concerns regarding future structural integrity make replacement unlikely. The local residents’ association, Connecting South Lake, has expressed disappointment and requested the facility be restored.
