City of Newcastle seeks $17 million annual increase in federal funding
Newcastle councillors have welcomed the Australian Labor Party’s commitment to create a five-year Federation Compact with local governments. This proposed compact aims to increase federal funding assistance for service delivery and allow Roads to Recovery funds to be used for purchasing plant and equipment.
Labor councillor Declan Clausen stated that the City of Newcastle could benefit from an additional $17 million annually if federal funding is restored. Such funds would be directed toward local roads, footpaths, sporting facilities, libraries, and community infrastructure.
Liberal councillor Callum Pull noted that while the compact is a positive development, the city must continue to advocate for restoring Financial Assistance Grants to one per cent of Commonwealth taxation revenue. These grants, which have supported councils since 1974, are projected to drop to 0.49 per cent of revenue in 2026-27.
