City of Parksville warns of phone number spoofing scams

The City of Parksville has issued a warning regarding fraudsters using “spoofing” techniques to make scam calls appear as though they are originating from legitimate city phone numbers.

Specifically, the city’s Emergency Management number (250-954-4672) is being targeted. Officials clarified that this number is only used for the Voyent Alert! emergency notification system for events such as wildfires or floods.

The city advised residents, particularly seniors and vulnerable community members, to remain cautious. Residents should be wary of callers who create a sense of urgency, demand payment via gift cards or cryptocurrency, or request sensitive information like Social Insurance Numbers or banking details. The city emphasized that it will never ask for passwords or payments during unsolicited calls.
