City of Sydney to remove lockboxes from public infrastructure
The City of Sydney has announced a policy to remove lockboxes attached to public infrastructure, including poles, fences, street signs, trees, and bike racks, effective 1 April 2027. While often associated with short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, the policy applies to any owner using council assets for key or valuables storage.
Mayor Clover Moore stated that these boxes are unsightly, create safety hazards such as tripping risks, and can obstruct the maintenance of public assets. The council noted instances where boxes were even drilled into street trees. Owners have until the end of March 2027 to relocate their boxes to private property.
Under the new rules, the council may remove boxes without prior warning or compensation, even if they are chained or padlocked. Removed items will be stored for up to 28 days, after which unclaimed boxes may be disposed of. To reclaim a box, owners must provide identifying details and contact the council within the specified window.
