Vernon to end lease for historic O’Keefe Ranch in British Columbia

The City of Vernon has announced it will not extend the lease for the Historic O’Keefe Ranch, which is set to expire on March 31, 2027. This decision affects the Historic O’Keefe Ranch and Interior Heritage Society, which has operated the site for nearly 50 years.

City officials stated that the current operating model for the city-owned property is not financially sustainable. Chief Administrative Officer Carey Herd indicated that the city is exploring future options to ensure a financially viable path forward while still recognizing the site’s community importance. Over the last 30 years, the city has invested $4.12 million into the property.

Douglas MacGregor, president of the society, emphasized that the ranch is a vital tourism destination and educational resource for the North Okanagan. He expressed concern regarding the lack of transparency in the decision-making process and noted that if the society dissolves, its specific attractions may have to be sold.
