City Thameslink station to close for eight months in 2027

City Thameslink station in central London is scheduled to close from May 17, 2027, until late December 2027 to facilitate the complete replacement of all ten aging escalators.

Network Rail stated that the escalators, which have been in service for over 35 years, have reached the end of their operational life. Recent flooding has further accelerated their deterioration, leading to ongoing access disruptions. Officials noted that a full station closure is the safest and most efficient method to complete the complex work, as it reduces the overall project duration compared to a partial closure.

During the closure, Thameslink trains will continue to operate on their normal routes but will not stop at City Thameslink. Passengers are advised to use Blackfriars station as an alternative. Network Rail has recommended that those using the northern entrance avoid walking to Farringdon station due to existing congestion, and additional staff will be deployed to assist with passenger flows during the period.
