City University of New York graduation rates decline by 10%
Graduation rates at the City University of New York (CUNY) have declined by nearly 10% over the last five years, according to data from the Mayor’s Management Report.
At CUNY community colleges, associate degree graduation rates fell from 38.9% in 2022 to 35.5% in 2026. Four-year undergraduate college graduation rates saw a steady decline from 62% in 2022 to 55.6% in the most recent academic year. The decline was even more pronounced in the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP), where rates dropped from 44% to 34.5%.
Former CUNY trustee Jeffrey Wiesenfeld attributed the decline to a ‘two-pronged problem,’ citing a drop in New York City public school standards and a relaxation of CUNY’s own academic requirements. CUNY officials stated that the declines are partly due to the lingering effects of COVID-19 pandemic disruptions and changes in freshman class composition.
