Ciudad de la Salud performs first robotic urological reconstructions in Panama
Specialists at the Ciudad de la Salud in Panama have successfully performed the country’s first high-complexity reconstructive urological surgeries using robotic assistance. The procedures utilized advanced technology, specifically the Toumai robotic system, to improve surgical precision and visualization.
The surgical sessions featured collaboration with Dr. Lee C. Zhao, a reconstructive urologist from New York, who provided training to Panamanian medical teams. The interventions included the repair of urethral stricture following a prostatectomy, ureteral stricture repair in a patient with an ileal conduit, and the correction of a rectourethral fistula.
Dr. Elías Bodden, head of Urology at Ciudad de la Salud, noted that the integration of robotic tools and specialized training aims to strengthen the capabilities of local medical staff. The initiative seeks to allow local surgical teams to perform these complex functional and aesthetic reconstructions autonomously, reducing the need for patients to seek medical treatment abroad.
