Ciudad Hidalgo factory fire destroys recycling plant and solvents

A major fire destroyed a recycling and thinner factory in Ciudad Hidalgo, Michoacán, on August 10. The blaze involved highly flammable materials, including approximately 170,000 liters of solvents, multiple storage containers, and two tankers with a capacity of 35,000 liters each.

During the incident, several explosions occurred due to the chemical nature of the stored substances. The fire resulted in the total loss of the factory facilities and the destruction of several parked tractor-trailers. While one report indicated no injuries, another noted that two firefighters were stunned by debris during an explosion, though they did not require hospital treatment.

Emergency response efforts involved multiple fire departments from Zitácuaro, Maravatío, and forest fire units, alongside Civil Protection. The area remains under surveillance by the Mexican Army, National Guard, and Civil Guard as cooling operations continue to prevent reignition. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
