Chihuahua leads Mexican exports with 25.1% national share

Chihuahua is experiencing significant economic and demographic shifts. According to recent data, the state's exports reached $49.0275 billion during the second quarter of 2026, representing 25.1% of Mexico's total export value. This marks an 87.3% annual increase, positioning Chihuahua as the leading entity in export value nationwide.

Demographically, INEGI reports that Chihuahua's population reached 3,886,377 in 2025. While the population is growing, the rate has slowed to 0.8% annually. The state is also seeing an aging trend, with the median age rising to 31 and a decrease in fertility rates. Ciudad Juárez remains the most populous city with over 1.6 million residents.

Economically, there is a rising trend in household reliance on non-work income, which increased from 34.9% in 2020 to 44.8% in 2025. Experts have noted that while social programs provide essential aid, there are concerns regarding long-term fiscal sustainability and potential dependency.
