Ciudad Juárez faces desert encroachment and new waste initiatives

Rapid urban and commercial expansion in southeastern Ciudad Juárez is creating environmental challenges as new housing developments and business centers are interspersed with large stretches of undeveloped desert. High winds frequently transport sand from these vacant lots into residential areas, streets, and businesses, creating accumulations that resemble mini-dunes.

In response to urban growth, municipal cleaning director Gibrán Solís announced plans to implement organic and inorganic waste separation in new southeastern developments starting in October or November. This initiative aims to support clean energy production at the local landfill by the company BioGas, which generates power for the city's street lighting. Officials are encouraging developers to integrate differentiated waste collection services into their initial project proposals.
