Ciudad Juárez hoteliers face 50 million peso loss from visa cancellations

Hoteliers in Ciudad Juárez are facing potential losses of up to 50 million pesos due to the cancellation of residence visa appointments at the U.S. Consulate, which began on August 26.

Rogelio González, head of the Association of Hotels and Motels, reported that room rentals in the consulate sector have already dropped by 50 percent. This decline has led to the closure of two hotels, one of which remains out of operation. There is significant uncertainty regarding when services will resume, with some reports suggesting a possible restart as late as January.

Local business leaders recently met with Katherine Beamer, the U.S. Consul in Juárez, to discuss the situation. While González noted that the consul showed openness to sharing news, the industry remains in a state of uncertainty. The association plans to promote other events to attract guests and mitigate the economic impact of the loss in consular tourism.
