Ciudad Juárez intensifies rickettsiosis prevention efforts

Health officials and legislators in Ciudad Juárez are intensifying efforts to combat rickettsiosis following a rise in cases and fatalities. According to the Ministry of Health, 65 cases of rickettsiosis and 30 deaths associated with tick bites have been recorded so far in 2026.

Deputy Jael Argüelles Díaz has launched anti-tick campaigns in local neighborhoods, such as Vista Los Ojitos, providing free topical treatments for pets and stray dogs to reduce transmission risks. These initiatives include distributing identification tags to promote responsible pet ownership.

Rogelio Covarrubias, director of Health District II Juárez, noted that medical assistance is often sought too late due to vague symptoms. He emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach involving specialists to address risk factors, pet responsibility, and the management of stray dogs. Covarrubias also highlighted ongoing training for health personnel, including binational training events conducted with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
