Ciudad Juárez police face CEDH recommendation for human rights abuses

The State Human Rights Commission (CEDH) has issued its fifth recommendation of the year regarding human rights violations by municipal police in Ciudad Juárez. The commission documented instances of excessive force and mistreatment during arrests.

In one specific case involving incidents from 2020, the CEDH found that officers from the Municipal Public Security Secretariat (SSPM) used excessive force against a man. Medical records corroborated the victim's claims of being beaten and subjected to asphyxiation while in custody, showing injuries to the knee, shoulder, and arm. In a separate incident, medical examinations revealed bruises and lesions on the victim's face and limbs, contradicting police claims that no force was necessary during the intervention.
