Mexico commemorates 179th anniversary of Niños Héroes de Chapultepec

Mexico held numerous civic and military ceremonies across the country to commemorate the 179th anniversary of the heroic defense of Chapultepec Castle by the ‘Niños Héroes’ on September 13, 1847.

In Mexico City, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led the official commemoration at the Altar a la Patria. During the event, Secretary of National Defense Ricardo Trevilla Trejo reaffirmed the military's commitment to national sovereignty and the protection of the nation's integrity.

Similar ceremonies were conducted by local and state authorities in various regions, including Puebla, Querétaro, Colima, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo, Veracruz, and Sinaloa. These events typically included a roll call of honor for the fallen cadets—Juan de la Barrera, Juan Escutia, Agustín Melgar, Fernando Montes de Oca, Vicente Suárez, and Francisco Márquez—as well as naval heroes José Azueta and Virgilio Uribe.

Officials at these gatherings emphasized the importance of preserving historical memory and instilling values of patriotism, loyalty, and service in younger generations to strengthen national identity.
