Ciudad Juárez residents face sewage overflows in Paula neighborhood

Residents of the Paula neighborhood in Ciudad Juárez are facing sanitary issues following heavy rains that caused sewage to overflow from the drainage system. The overflow has left a thick layer of black fecal sludge on streets and sidewalks, creating foul odors and health concerns for approximately thirty families and nearby students.

Local residents reported a lack of coordination between municipal agencies, stating that the Cleaning Department (Dirección de Limpia) and the Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS) have attributed responsibility to one another. Some neighbors noted that they have had to pay private individuals in the past to clear similar blockages.

In response, the municipal government deployed personnel from the Cleaning Department to perform superficial cleaning using available machinery. Gibrán Solís Kanahan, head of the department, stated that these actions were carried out under instructions from Mayor Héctor Ortiz Orpinel. However, he clarified that while the city is assisting with surface cleaning, the fundamental repair of the sanitary drainage system falls under the jurisdiction of JMAS.
