Ciudad Juárez seeks transition from manufacturing to technological innovation

Ciudad Juárez is facing a critical economic transition as leaders call for a shift from a predominantly manufacturing-based model toward activities involving research, design, engineering, and technological development. During the “Ideas en Acción” citizen forum, Marco Bonilla Mendoza, a state coordinator for the PAN party, emphasized the need to leverage the city's existing industrial infrastructure in electronics, medical devices, and auto parts to foster higher complexity in production.

To remain competitive and address social gaps, experts suggest strengthening the training of technicians and engineers while improving the link between educational institutions and the private sector. This evolution is seen as essential to move beyond simple assembly and toward true technological innovation.

Local economic data highlights both opportunities and challenges. While the city possesses a large productive population, with approximately 70 percent of residents between the ages of 15 and 65, recent trends show shifts in the labor market. Unemployment rates were noted to have moved from 1.7 percent to 2.7 percent between the second quarter of 2025 and the same period in 2026, while self-employment increased from 12.7 to 13.8 percent.
