Ciudad Serdán temple elevated to Diocesan Sanctuary

The San Andrés Apóstol parish temple in Ciudad Serdán, Puebla, has been elevated to a Diocesan Sanctuary in honor of the venerated image of Jesús de las Tres Caídas. On August 31, 2026, Archbishop Víctor Sánchez Espinosa of Puebla officially designated the site to recognize the long-standing devotion and the continuous influx of pilgrims visiting the Nazarene Christ image.

The tradition surrounding the image dates back to the mid-17th century, possibly around 1644. According to local legend, the image arrived from Spain via the port of Veracruz and was being transported toward Mexico City by a mule train. The legend states that a mule carrying the wooden box containing the image refused to move after an overnight stay in the area, leading the merchants to unload the box, at which point the animal resumed its journey.
