Ciutadella residents report recurring sewage overflows

A sewage overflow flooded several streets in the Cala en Blanes area of Ciutadella following a failure at an Abaqua pumping station. The incident, which occurred around 8:00 AM on Monday, caused a tank overflow that sent waste through the streets of S’Hipòdrom, S’Amarador, and Sa Cigonya, reaching as far as the commercial zone via Avinguda de Calespiques.

While the technical issue was resolved within an hour, local residents expressed significant frustration, stating that such overflows are a recurring problem. Neighbors reported that even minor rainfall often causes the system to overflow, forcing some to install makeshift barriers, such as rising gates in front of garages, to prevent sewage from entering their properties. Abaqua personnel cleaned and disinfected the affected areas with hyperchlorinated water following the incident.
