Riccia, Italy: Armed robbery of bank ATM sparks explosions and panic
In the early hours of a recent night, four masked men in a large SUV forced their way to the BPM bank’s ATM on Via Garibaldi in Riccia, Molise. They set off a series of explosions that shattered nearby windows, damaged a parked car and caused a column of smoke, terrifying residents. Witnesses reported hearing gun‑like shots used to intimidate onlookers. The thieves stole an estimated €35‑40 000, although the cash may have been marked and partially unusable.
Carabinieri investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the bank and nearby businesses, and have begun identification efforts. Mayor Pietro Testa expressed alarm, noting the event shatters the perception of safety in small towns and could affect ATM usage. The operation appears highly coordinated, with the vehicle reportedly parked to block traffic and the assailants using respirator masks.
No injuries were reported, but the incident has sparked widespread fear among locals and prompted a heightened police presence in the area.
