Desafio da Ponte 2026 race prompts special traffic measures on Rio–Niterói bridge

On Sunday, 2 August 2026, the annual Desafio da Ponte half‑marathon was run across the Rio–Niterói bridge, starting at the Caminho Niemeyer in Niterói and finishing at the Boulevard Olímpico in Rio. Daniel Santana de Souza won the men’s race in 1 h 07 min 29 s, while Maria Lucineida da Silva claimed the women’s title in 1 h 17 min 48 s.

To accommodate the event, the Rio municipal government and the concessionaire Ecovias implemented a special traffic scheme. Interdictions began Saturday night in both cities, with road closures, signage, and 50 traffic‑control agents deployed. The bridge remained partially closed for the athletes, but all lanes were fully reopened at 10:29 a.m., earlier than the originally planned noon deadline. By 11:25 a.m. traffic flow had normalised, with crossing times of about 13 minutes in both directions.

The operation was coordinated by CET‑Rio, NitTrans and municipal guards, using variable‑message panels and real‑time monitoring from the Centre of Operations and Resilience (COR‑Rio). The measures aimed to ensure safety for participants while minimising disruption for commuters.
