Civil Nuclear Police Authority expenditure rises to £178.7 million

The Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA) reported that operating expenditure rose by approximately £24.6 million during 2025-26, reaching a total of £178.7 million. This 16% increase from the previous year was driven largely by £19.7 million in additional pay costs, including the impact of previous pay awards, higher pension and National Insurance contributions, and the transfer of Ministry of Defence Police personnel to the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) following changes in site responsibilities.

During this period of organizational change and site closures, reported workplace stress cases within the authority increased by 86%, rising from 29 to 54 cases.

The CNC expanded its armed protection role to include four non-nuclear energy sites while managing the cessation of policing at older facilities. The force remains a critical component of the UK’s national security, providing more than 60% of the country’s total armed policing surge capability and holding authorization to provide armed protection on cross-Channel ferries.
