Civil Protection conducts earthquake simulation in Friuli

To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, the Civil Protection Department is conducting a large-scale interregional and transborder emergency exercise. The event includes a simulated 5.7 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Gemona del Friuli to test the responsiveness of emergency systems.

The exercise involves the mobilization of regional mobile columns and participation from institutional partners in Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia. Activities include the activation of the regional emergency coordination center (Corem) in Palmanova and the establishment of a field tent city capable of accommodating 250 people in Gemona.

Scheduled activities range from simulated seismic events and logistical deployments to scientific roundtables on risk management and transborder emergency logistics. Regional Councilor Riccardo Riccardi stated that the exercise aims to transform the memory of the 1976 tragedy into concrete preparation for future emergencies.
