Civil protection vehicle in Gangelt decommissioned due to lack of federal funds
A civil protection vehicle stationed at the Gangelt fire station in the Heinsberg district has been taken out of service due to a lack of federal funding for maintenance. The vehicle, an LF-KatS Bund fire fighting vehicle, has been non-operational since October 6.
The issue is not related to technical defects or personnel shortages, but rather to the federal government's failure to reimburse the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and local municipalities for maintenance and repair costs. Under Article 104a of the German Basic Law, the federal government is responsible for financing civil protection equipment.
The District Government of Cologne has ordered that federal vehicles with pending maintenance or repairs be reported as non-operational if cost reimbursement is not guaranteed. This status, referred to as ‘Status 6’, currently affects the Gangelt vehicle, which is the first of eleven federal vehicles stationed in the Heinsberg district to be decommissioned for financial reasons.
These federal vehicles operate under the principle of dual use, meaning they are intended for civil protection in emergencies but can also be utilized by municipalities for regular firefighting and disaster relief operations.
