Civil service reforms and welfare initiatives highlighted in Nigeria and Ghana

In Delta State, Nigeria, the government is set to commission newly completed Permanent Secretaries’ Quarters in Asaba on August 20, 2026. Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government, stated that the project is part of a broader initiative by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to improve the welfare and working conditions of civil servants. Current measures include a three-day work week, vehicle allowances, access to loans, and increased training opportunities.

In Ghana, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang addressed the 2025 Civil Service Awards, urging public servants to prioritize integrity, innovation, and hard work. She highlighted ongoing reforms, including the National Public Sector Reform Strategy 2 and a new framework to establish an independent commission for transparent public sector compensation. Head of the Civil Service, Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darkoh, also called for increased digital innovation and a shift toward delivering tangible results for citizens.
