Civil unrest and police misconduct reported in Yucatán municipalities

In the Yucatán region of Mexico, two separate incidents of civil unrest and alleged misconduct have been reported in the municipalities of Mocochá and Hopelchén.

In Mocochá, a gardener named Jorge Vargas was allegedly subjected to excessive force and physical aggression by municipal police officers. According to his son, Humberto Ek Chalé, officers intercepted Vargas during a routine check, destroyed his personal belongings, and violently arrested him. The family is demanding an investigation by Municipal President Pablo Cutz Domínguez and intends to file criminal charges.

In the community of Iturbide, Hopelchén, approximately 30 residents led by municipal commissioner Yanuario Ayil Torres detained and tied up three public works supervisors. The protesters were expressing indignation over the local government's refusal to construct new streets, opting instead to only rehabilitate existing ones. The employees were held for about an hour before being released following a dialogue with City Council Secretary Herminio May Dzib, who committed to reviewing the community's demands.
