Italian towns adjust waste tax (TARI) rates – cuts in some, hikes in others

Several Italian municipalities have revised their waste‑tax (TARI) rates for 2026. The council of Cartoceto approved a 5 % reduction for both households and businesses, citing efficient collection and a balanced budget. Corinaldo kept the tax stable for families while lowering it for commercial activities, using surplus funds to support local investment. In contrast, the Corato administration announced steep increases for businesses – up to 87 % for certain sectors – arguing that the tariff structure follows regional and national guidelines. Orsara achieved a 22 % overall cut, attributing the reduction to high recycling rates and recovered tax evasion. Figline e Incisa approved targeted discounts for low‑income households and specific business categories, including new cultural venues. Lamezia Terme faced criticism after proposing a 17 % rise for enterprises, which local merchants say could strain profitability. The varied approaches reflect each council’s effort to balance fiscal sustainability, waste‑management costs and local economic conditions.
