Civitavecchia port clears GNV Cristal blockade, ship departs for Tunis
A planned departure of the GNV Cristal ferry from Civitavecchia to Tunis was cancelled on 25 July 2026, leaving hundreds of passengers and their vehicles stranded. Protesters occupied the main gate of the port, creating a tense situation. Italian and Tunisian authorities entered negotiations, reached an agreement and authorised the vessel to sail. After the accord, boarding of about 700 passengers and 300 vehicles resumed on 26 July, and the ferry left for Tunis. The operation was coordinated by the Port Authority of Civitavecchia, the police, Carabinieri, Border Police, Guardia di Finanza and Civil Protection. Gaudenzio Parenti, director of the National Association of Port Companies (ANCIP), was on site, kept in contact with Vice‑Minister Edoardo Rixi, Transport Commission president Salvatore Deidda and other officials, and praised the professionalism of the forces and the port system’s response. The incident was resolved without violence, restoring normal traffic flow in the port.
