CJIB reports data breach involving incorrect criminal records

The Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) has reported a data breach to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) following a technical error. The glitch caused traffic violations and criminal cases to be incorrectly linked to the wrong individuals, which were then visible to users via the ‘MijnCJIB’ digital portal.

The agency noted that incorrect information may also have been sent out via physical mail, though investigations are ongoing to confirm the extent of this. While the digital portal was temporarily closed to prevent further unauthorized access, it has since been reopened after the CJIB stated that all data has been corrected and verified.

The total number of affected individuals has not yet been disclosed, and specific details regarding the nature of the internal technical failure have not been released. The CJIB is currently working to rectify incorrectly sent letters and manage the aftermath of the breach. Affected persons are expected to receive personal notifications.
