Coyoacán inaugurates Utopía Elena Poniatowska Amor community center

Mexico City Head of Government Clara Brugada Molina has inaugurated the ‘Utopía Elena Poniatowska Amor’ in the San Lucas neighborhood of Coyoacán. The project involved an investment of over 242 million pesos to transform nearly 20,000 square meters of public space, rehabilitating a site that had been abandoned for more than two decades.

The complex is designed to benefit approximately 130,000 residents across 17 neighborhoods. It features a wide array of free services, including a public care system with communal dining, laundries, childcare centers, and day centers for seniors. A notable addition is the city’s first free community center specialized in treating Parkinson’s disease.

Other facilities include a semi-Olympic swimming pool, a gym, a digital transformation center with 3D printers, and the Museo Coyote, which currently hosts an immersive exhibition of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The site also incorporates environmental and cultural elements, such as a climate action room and a corn tortilla shop using native maize.
