United Nations General Assembly 81 convenes in New York with global leaders

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is convening in New York, drawing global leaders to address critical issues including the Middle East, Ukraine, and climate change. The assembly is held under the presidency of Philemon Yang of Cameroon, with the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

Numerous heads of state are attending with specific agendas. Argentine President Javier Milei is traveling to New York to advocate for sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and meet with economists and business leaders. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is visiting Silicon Valley before heading to the UN to discuss technology, AI, and investment opportunities. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino and Dominican President Luis Abinader are also scheduled to address the assembly.

In Cyprus, President Nikos Christodoulides will address the plenary on September 23. Meanwhile, the Pacific Islands Forum leaders are participating to elevate regional priorities such as sea-level rise and ocean governance. The event coincides with heightened security measures in New York City, as authorities deploy extensive police and federal resources to manage the influx of international delegations and potential protests.
